Uses and Gratifications of California Gurls by Katy Perry

As songs have many different genres, this pop song would offer identification to people who like pop. This would mean that they would have a sense of belonging with people and indentify themselves with a group of people. This would also differentiate themselves from people who listen to other genres and thus would be able to be indentified with this group.

This music video would also offer escape to the audience, as it would allow them to be lost into this world that the music video has created. This is also reinforced by the nature of the world that has been created by the music video, as it is largely surreal compared to the real world, which offers escape to people from their jobs and the same daily routine as it is different and they would feel the need to explore.

There is an obvious sense of entertainment in this music video, which is created by a few different aspects. One of them is the actual music. People will find this enjoyable to listen to and will get entertainment from doing so. Another aspect is the music video itself. It has components of humour tied in with a sense of a story unfolding leadingto an increase in entertainment, as you want to see what happens. This video also uses sex appeal as a way of creating entertainment. It features a lot of women, which are dressed in revealing clothes who dance around. This adds to the entertainment, especially to the male population, as they will get a lot of entertainment from seeing this.

This music video would also create gossip between people who may or not being friends filling the need for them to talk about things. They would want to talk about this since she is a worldwide star and the fact that this quite an extravagant music video. They may also want to talk about how snoop dog teamed up with Katy Perry to make this music video, which seems to be an unlikely pair as they both make music for different genres.

Explain How Andrew Goodwin's theory relates to the video. Task 2.

The genre of Katy perry California girls would be classed as a pop song. This can be seen by the specific conventions used within the music video. some of these specific conventions would be; bright colours, positive lyrics and a smily performance. Also with that in a pop song you tend to see a simple dance routine that a younger audience could follow and learn.

Katy Perry shows her own conventions which the audience have come to expect to see within her music videos which would be a lot flesh and also some crazy customs and different hair styles and colours.

for example example below you can see that Katy Perry is wearing nothing whilst laying on top of what appers to be a candy floss cloud. Also to the right of that is another one of Katy Perry's wild customs with also the dancers in similar customs. This represents the type of person she is because her customs are outgoing but also fun and makes her attractive.

At the start of the video a lyric from Snoop Dog states 'lets take a journey loved ones' and places a figure of Katy perry on a board which looks like she is ready for some sort of journey of game.

Towards the end of the video the speed of the video cuts each time to the beat it happens around four times and stays in the same area but movies onto a different clip. This shows that the speed of the music is going with the beat to each shot to show a bit of everyone to finalise the video.

Katy Perry's video is seen as a fantasy land and could relate to charlie and thechocolate factory this would be because of the land of chocolate and sweets where everything can be eaten.
This video can also relate to Alice in Wonderland because in Alice in Wonderland create a feel that everything is bigger than her which is just like Katy perry where the land and everything is much bigger than her and is overwhelming.

These images here are showing the
representation between both Katy Perry
and Alice in Wonderland by showing how
both lands are towering of the main
characters.

Laura Mulveys Male Gaze theory- Task 5. casey rayner

One big sector of Laura Mulveys Male gaze theory is the virginal/whore dichotomy. In other words this is the media representing women as either being a sexy whore who licks lollypops in music videos half naked etc. Whereas the innocent virgin would be running through fields or child-like places, clothed and looking innocent.

A practical exercise for this would be that all males and females in the class will split into two groups, and the girls must represent both the virginal women, and the sexy slutty woman. Then it is all the males job in the class to sculpture each women/girl to move in certain ways, take off clothing etc to capture the right effect whether its the innocent virgin or the whore.

To make things fun as well males will also have to try and adapt themselves to acting in a virgin-like way, and in a whore like way. Then at the end of the class, without being sexist; the class will have to take a vote by raising your hands and deciding whether the males or females were better at either the whore or the innocent virgin. Once the winning gender is declared, that gender will have to have a 'BATTLE OFF', and it will have to be sexier and raunchier then ever, and the innocence more innocent then a new born baby!

AND

Another factor of her theory is that the camera always represents a males point of view, but would this be accepted in real life? is this brainwashing men to be sex crazy? do men always look at womens boobs?

This task is more of a survey, your group should split into three more groups, so there's three different jobs being executed within a group. One group will walk around as if they are the camera and seeing the reactions from the public, whereas another group will be taking a survey from teachers about their favorite genres of film, and then asking whether they'd be comfortable if they knew men were always like the camera. Lastly a survey will be carried out to males in the class asking whether they'd prefer life to be more like an American Pie film with no worries, sex and parties every day?
